Fukushima Medical University's Radiation Medical Science Center implemented a Pregnancy and Birth Survey in 2011 to assess the health status of and provide telephone counseling to mothers living in Fukushima after the nuclear accident. We studied the characteristics of mothers who received the counseling and the content of their concerns. We conducted a self-administered questionnaire survey among women who were pregnant or gave birth around the time of the Great East Japan Earthquake in Fukushima. The responses of 8,358 mothers were analyzed. Significantly more mothers received telephone counseling who experienced: interruptions in antenatal care, high-risk pregnancies with complications and/or anomalies, cesarean sections, and being primipara. The most frequent topic of the counseling was "effects of radiation", followed by "health of the mothers" and "childrearing." Higher proportions of the counseled mothers fed their babies with formula because of concerns regarding the radioactive contamination of their breast milk. Our results suggest the importance of paying attention to high-risk mothers and providing counseling not only about the effects of radiation as an emergency response, but also about childrearing as part of routine care.
