The purpose of translating the NCS was to use it for the examination of concurrent validity of Clinical Nursing Competence Self-assessment Scale (CNCSS) developed for this project and its usefulness in Japan of the NCS originally developed overseas. After literature reviews on translation of scales, we investigated methods to maintain the equivalence of the Finnish and Japanese versions. During this literature review, basically we were able to confirm that a number of papers were based on Brislin's translation model. In this process of repeated back translations, communication with the scale developer was an important clue to understanding the intentions of the questionnaire items. While we tried to make questionnaire items which could be understood by Japanese nurses, in the present translation we ended up placing emphasis on the meanings in Finnish (semantic translation) as we had a presumption that Finnish translation had to be approved by the developer. Therefore, in the process of back translation, we were able to have confirmation of the equivalence between the Japanese translation and the semantically translated text originally written in source language. For the future, we are planning to examine to what extent this Japanese version NCS can be used after its reliability and validity based on the survey results have been examined. Small-group Interviews were hold to the 20 nurses caring for perioperative patients. Collected data were analyzed qualitatively and inductively. As a result, ten categories of judgment were identified: [assess and cope with the anxiety of an operation] ; [sense of an abnormal patient's condition and report to a medical doctor] ; [distinction and cope with risk of stiring up trouble] ; [early ambulation] ; [use of a prescription medicine] ; [assess and cope with pain] ; [guide of the patient's life after discharge] ; [assess of physical condition and preoperative] ; [cure and care during restoration] ; and [grasp and cope with the patient's personality] The results of this study suggest that floor nurses judge the patient's condition in a short period of before surgery, that they judge the patient's condition in partnership with a medical doctor, and that they judge the patient's mental condition, comfort and the life by themselves, and that the grasp of patient's personality supports these clinical judgments. Semi-structured Interviews were done to the total of 7 parents (2 pairs and 3 mothers) from 5 cases of the children who have died at the age of 18 months to 8 years old after being hospitalized in the pediatric ward of a university hospital in a rural area to collect data for a qualitative inductive analysis. As a result, the families of the deceased children expected the medical staff to "always provide reliable and appropriate care"and to "provide the support for the family especially financially and environmentally", during the struggle with illness. It has also been found that after losing the child the members of the family tend to share their thoughts and feelings with the medical staff who has shared the same experience during the struggle with illness and the death of the child, because they were able to "listen to how they feel" without asking questions or asking for explanations. The things the members of the family need, such as "the reassurance that the parents have made the right decision" and "the answers to their questions", can only be given by the medical staff who has actually been there through the struggle with illness and the death of the child. While these sentences have been criticized as nonstandard by some grammarians,current corpus-based studies reveal that they are used more often than expected because of several pragmatic properties. The following discussion shows that the corpus-based descriptions and pragmatic interpretation of these expressions may contribute to a better understanding of them and shed some light on the description of definitions in EFL dictionaries.
